THE QUALITY OF YOUR ATTENTION DETERMINES THE QUALITY OF OTHER PEOPLE’S THINKING
We all know communication is key! People focus so much on what they want to say that they rarely truly listen and listening is the key to effective communication.
Creating a listening environment automatically creates a thinking environment, it is therefore a vital skill that everyone should develop.
People generally listen to answer, whilst you are talking to them, they are in the process of constructing their answer and preparing to deliver it, therefore more often than not missing your message.
Its always important to listen, but we generally don’t. By not listening, we inhibit the thinking of the other person which greatly restricts their creativity, focus and potential.
No matter who you are, colleague, customer, supplier, boss, family, friend, doctor, teacher, when you are not listened to or you are not listening to someone, really listening, you miss vital information, be it verbal or non verbal and more importantly, you don’t feel what you are saying is valued.
When you develop your listening skills not only do you improve your communication, you will create an environment for the person being listened to to expand their thinking.
Many people in business miss potentially valuable information that could change the way their company does business or how a product or service could be improved. Free information/feedback that is being delivered when someone is talking to you, if you are not really listening, is a missed opportunity for improvement and growth!
Everyone would benefit greatly from improved listening skills, when a whole company learns to listen, they will have a workforce that feels valued and will establish a culture of creativity.
Developing a listening culture, whether it’s within a team, division or the whole company brings about changes that encourages creativity, productivity and positivity.
LISTENING IGNITES THE HUMAN MIND
Positive effects of a listening culture…….

Improved relationships
Productive meetings
Innovation/creativity
Increased engagement & motivation
Solutions
Reduced conflict
Negative effects of a non-listening culture……

Reduction in problem solving/solutions
Likelihood of increased conflict
Lack of innovation/creativity
Good employees may leave
Customers may leave
Quieter/introvert individuals won’t contribute
Creating a listening environment automatically creates a thinking environment, it is therefore a vital skill that everyone should develop, especially in the fast paced environment we live and work in today.
